Four Steps to Troubleshoot A Cordless Rivet Gun

When your cordless rivet gun just isn't working the way it should, we know how frustrating it can be. We have devised a list of four super simple troubleshooting tasks you can run through with your cordless rivet gun before you give up on it completely. When it comes to troubleshooting rivet guns, it may seem like a daunting task – but we’ve broken it down into four super simple steps for ultimate success.

First, nose assembly maintenance on the cordless rivet gun

Cordless rivet guns need to be maintained, especially in the nose assembly area. Depending on the number of rivets being installed, the maintenance frequency varies from once a month to daily. Otherwise, the accumulation of rivet swarf in and around the jaw case and jaws will cause the jaw mechanism to malfunction. As a result, this can create significant damage to the nose housing and cause great stress on the gearbox. Fortunately, the latest range of Gesipa® CAS cordless rivet guns has been programmed to slow down the jaw assembly on the return stroke to reduce the possibility of a failure in this area.

Here is an example of swarf build-up in the inside front of the nose assembly:

Evidence shows that setting aluminium/aluminium rivets, such as Bulb-Tite® rivets, will leave more swarf in the nose assembly and jaw case. If you are in this user zone, you will need to pay extra attention to cleaning up the nozzle. For maintenance instructions, download the Gesipa Powerbird Pro Jaw Set Maintenance manual.

Second, loosened nosepiece of the rivet gun

The nosepiece can become loose, and this will cause damage to threads. Make sure the nosepiece is tightened before using the tool, and it must be tightened with a 12mm spanner.

Third, nosepiece selection

The Gesipa rivet gun is supplied with a selection of nosepieces. They are stored under the sliding hex key. To avoid tool failure, choosing the right-sized nosepiece for the rivets you are installing is key.

For the Gesipa® Bulb-Tite® rivets, the mandrels are slightly thicker. Therefore, a correct “BT” nosepiece is required to allow extra room for the mandrels to be inserted. The table below gives you an idea of selecting the correct nosepiece for your job.

Alternatively, you can use the Gesipa nosepiece finder to choose the right nosepiece.

Last but not least, emptying the mandrel collector

The mandrel collector needs to be emptied regularly to avoid the spent mandrels jamming inside the tool. If you ever wonder how often it needs to be done, the rule is to empty it when it's half full. Alternatively, you can contact us to buy a transparent collector, which allows the number of spent mandrels to be monitored constantly.
